Jul 17, 2024 · The article is written in the light of critical whiteness studies and the critical discourse regarding the political implications of literary works. It deals with Lorraine Hansberry’s play A Raisin in the Sun, which I position within the context of black American radical theatre.
Some critics, however, did critique A Raisin in the Sun for its realism. Gerald Weales, in an article published in Commentary in 1959, claimed that “The play, first of all, is old fashioned. Practically no serious playwright, in or out of America, works in such a determinedly naturalistic form.”.
In the eyes of some critics, however, A Raisin in the Sun was passe almost before it closed, because they saw it only as a protest play or social drama about a Black family's struggle to buy a house in a white neighborhood.
