Al-Kafrun (Arabic: الكفرون; also spelled Kafroun) is a Syrian village in the Tartous Governorate. It is situated in the an-Nusayriyah Mountains range at 550 metres (1,800 ft) above sea level, making it a summer resort for locals who want to escape the hot summer temperatures in the lowlands.
Al-Kafirun is classified as a Meccan surah, meaning it's believed to have been revealed in Mecca. According to tradition, the surah was revealed when some chieftains of Mecca, including Walid ibn al-Mughira, proposed peace to Muhammad that one year the Muslims would worship pagan gods, and the next year Meccans would worship Allah. It is authentically narrated from the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) that he would recite this chapter in the Sunnah prayers of Fajr and Maghrib as well as in the two rak’ahs after the tawaf around the ka’ba.
