However, Mei attempts to use her dagger to intercept Leo's dagger in flight. The result is that neither Leo nor Jin dies, but only Mei. In the end, Leo stumbles away in guilt while Jin cries over Mei's body, singing a song praising her as a "rare beauty", the likes of which he will never see again.
What ended up happening: Leo faked throwing his dagger. Instead he flicked his wrist sending a drop of blood at Jin. Mei thought he threw the dagger, so she threw hers to deflect it (and in the process killed herself). She realized too late that it was just a drop of blood.

Xiao Mei, portrayed by Zhang Ziyi (also in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Hero), is undoubtedly the most interesting and well written character of the film. She did a tremendous job in selling her character to the audience as a blind dancer, highly skilled ninja and a lover.
