Neuburg has been inhabited since the Bronze Age with artifacts discovered on the hill where the modern palace is located. [ 3 ] A Roman settlement was also located on the high hill overlooking the Danube, providing a part of the Limes , the border between the Empire and its Germanic enemies.
In 1527, Count Palatine Otto Henry initiated a significant transformation of the Neuburg Castle. He ordered the castle to be redesigned into a Renaissance palace, aiming to elevate its artistic quality and status. As a result, the castle became one of the most important palaces in Germany during the first half of the 16th Century.
The focus is on the era of Ottheinrich, the founder of the palace, including tapestries from the Count Palatine's famous art collection, as well as the time of Philipp Wilhelm of Palatinate-Neuburg and his sons Johann Wilhelm and Karl III Philipp, who built the Baroque east wing.

As you enter the Neuburg Palace, there is a wooden door on your left. This is the entrance to the oldest Protestant chapel in Baveria and the first ever Protestant church interior. It beautiful and simple with a fresco by Hans Bocksberger. Other highlights include the graffiti biblical scenes in the central courtyard.
