Sep 20, 2019 · 4 min read. “Between Two Ferns: The Movie” is one of the most amiable comedies of the year, even if it includes a joke where Zach Galifianakis asks a question out loud about Benedict Cumberbatch ’s unusual mug—right to the Oscar-nominated actor’s face.

Between Two Ferns: The Movie premieres Friday, September 20 on Netflix.
Between Two Ferns, Zach Galifianakis' low blood sugar Funny or Die celebrity roast series, is now, for better or worse, a Netflix movie. Lifted up and out of its online comedy sketch bubble, Between Two Ferns: The Movie presents us with a full narrative for the faux show. Specifically, it offers a backstory explaining why an eccentric, obtuse public access TV host would somehow land an avalanche of A-Listers willing to endure five minutes of dry insults.
The loose idea here, for this quasi-improvisational road trip tale directed by Scott Aukerman, is that Will Ferrell is a maniacal coke addict who, for the sake of trillions of "clicks" on Funny or Die, forces his celebrity friends to fly to North Carolina to appear on a small-town show hosted by a rude moron.
So then the question is: Does Between Two Ferns, and the salty selfishness of Galifianakis' character, make for an engaging 90-minute movie? Does the premise lend itself to a full-length feature? Can any of it survive outside of the iconic interview segments?
The answer is... not quite. It does its best. There are some moments that land well, and there are some hearty giggles to be had here and there, but ultimately the star of the show is still Zach going toe-to-toe with the likes of McConaughey, Paul Rudd, Brie Larson, Benedict Cumberbatch, David Letterman, and more.
And that never feels more apparent than during the end credits, which feature outtakes of Zach and his guests cracking up and breaking. I could have easily watched 20 minutes of just them all trying to keep a straight, sour face while Galifianakis asks the most asinine s*** in the world. I then came to realize that this was more fun than the whole movie.
Now that there's an actual story in place, and one that extends up and out of the studio, Between Two Ferns: The Movie is kind of haphazard when it comes to the celebrities it flaunts. Some of them are doing the regular "original recipe" shtick of being themselves and taking offense to Zach's questions. Others are doing what Zach (and Will) are doing and playing silly facsimile versions of themselves.
Tonally, it creates an imbalance in which Zach's "character" of Zach is lessened because he might run into someone else going even bigger than he is. Peter Dinklage, Chrissy Teigen, and even (briefly) John Cho poke fun at themselves a bit here, by not emulating their true selves, and it makes you wonder why some celebs are playing it serious and others are having a go. Though, to be fair, hearing Teigen explain that she owes her career to the plot of 2009's The Box was pretty hilarious.
Rounding out the cast, playing the courageous crew of Between Two Ferns, is Lauren Lapkus, Jiavani Linayao, and Ryan Gaul. Lapkus, who's wonderful in everything, is one of those gifted performers who can be funny without necessarily scene-stealing. Which is important here because she has to be as equally quirky and kooky as Galifianakis, but his silly surliness still has drive the story.
Between Two Ferns: The Movie does its best to coat Zach Galifianakis' dense and dopey TV host with a larger story but, in the end, the best parts are still when it's just him glassily staring into the eyes of a movie star and telling them how much they suck at acting. Despite a handful of laughs, it will simply live on Netflix, perfectly, where not...
Sep 20, 2019 · Despite being an alt-comedy Funny or Die production — far from the mainstream ethos of TV’s 45-year-old sketch comedy king — Netflix‘s Between Two Ferns: The Movie is a modern-day SNL flick.
