New Rose Hotel is my #3 in the short story collection (and only because "Burning Chrome" has to be up there somewhere), for its very Gibsonian way of revealing the story drop by drop, world-building in sub clauses. Loved it, so the movie was a major letdown.

Having the main goal established, Abel Ferrera in New Rose Hotel changes gears and becomes less a spy thriller, something that would clearly fit the story, but more of a doomed love story, where X, slowly but surely, falls in love with Sandii.
A corporate raider (Christopher Walken) and his henchman (Willem Dafoe) use a chanteuse (Asia Argento) to lure a scientific genius away from his employer and family.
