May 31, 2017 · The name Higham comes from two Saxon words: Heg (High) Ham (small place/village) During Norman times, most of the land now known as Pendle Forest, was uncultivated land and available for hunting. Originally called Pendle Chase, it came into the possession of the De Lacy family.
Higham has origins which are much older than first appear from the surrounding houses and Victorian church. Records exist of a grant of land to the Archbishop of Canterbury by the King of Mercia in 774 AD. So a church in what is now known as Lower Higham would have existed in Saxon times.
Our Church, S.John's dedicated on 29th January 1862 and replaced S.Mary's (Saxon foundation) as the Parish Church in 1987. We are open daily (under CCTV). The Blessed Sacrament is reserved.
The medieval church of S.Mary's, near the edge of the marshes bordering the river Thames, has evidence of Saxon work, although most of the fabric dates from the 13th and 14th centuries.

Dec 5, 2022 · The original Higham parish church. A church existed on this site in Saxon times but was rebuilt after the Norman Conguest (1066). A nunnery was founded near the church in the 12th century. The church was made redundant after the completion of St John's Church closer to the population center in 1862 .
