Existing status. All of the five major U.S. territories are permanently inhabited and have locally elected territorial legislatures and executives and some degree of political autonomy. Four of the five are "organized", but American Samoa is technically "unorganized".
The United States has control over fourteen territories. Five of them (American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico, and the United States Virgin Islands) have a permanent, nonmilitary population, while nine of them (the United States Minor Outlying Islands) do not.

- American Samoa. Total area: 77 square miles (199 sq km) Population: 51,504. Nearly all 12 of the islands of American Samoa are volcanic in origin and have coral reefs around them.
- Baker Island. Total area: .81 square miles (2.1 sq km) Population: Uninhabited. An unpopulated coral atoll, Baker Island is a U.S. National Wildlife Refuge and visited by more than a dozen varieties of birds as well as endangered and threatened sea turtles.

- Howland Island. Total area: 1 square mile (2.6 sq km) Population: Uninhabited. About halfway between Australia and Hawaii, the uninhabited Howland Island is mostly submerged.

The United States of America holds claim to 16 territories outside of the United States. These range from Puerto Rico, with over 140 smaller islands and over 3 million residents, to uninhabited territories (and disputed territories) such as Bajo Nuevo Bank, Navassa Island, Serranilla Bank, and Wake Island.
