Plot. In the late 19th-century American West, a Kiger mustang colt, Spirit, is born to a herd of wild horses; he grows into a stallion, and assumes the leadership of the herd. One night, upon following a strange light near his herd, Spirit finds horses tied to a log and their wranglers sleeping around a campfire.
Spirit soon grows into a stallion, and assumes the role of leader of the herd, whose duty it is to keep the herd safe. Spirit is a courageous leader, but has great curiosity. Spotting a strange light one night not far from his herd, the stallion is unable to control his curiosity and investigates.

Spirit is the main protagonist in the film Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron, which was created and released by DreamWorks in 2002. He is the leader of the Cimarron Herd. Spirit is a dunskin (buckskin dun) Mustang stallion with a powerful, muscular frame and a boxy head.
Spirit is a wild stallion and leader of his herd, who is captured and treated badly by a Cavalry Colonel (Cromwell) until he escapes with the help of a young Lakota brave, Little Creek (Studi).
