Hiram Walker, a successful grain merchant, founded what would become Canadian Club® in 1858. Our first distillery was established in Walkerville, Ontario because of the exceptional quality of the local grains there. In those early days, if you wanted whisky, you took your own jug or bottle to the local store and filled it from a generic barrel.

Canadian Club Whisky is matured in white oak American Bourbon barrels. That’s the reason for the nice and distinctive, but not pronounced oak flavor of the Canadian Club. The Angel’s Share (evaporation into air) is about 3% here.
In 1890, the whisky was officially labeled ‘Canadian Club Whisky’. Four years later, the American government passed the ‘bottled in bond’ law. Whiskies now had to bear their age and further improved Canadian Club’s fortunes.
