The State Archives of Baden-Württemberg contains eight divisions and is headed by a President. The different divisions are located in Stuttgart, Ludwigsburg, Karlsruhe, Freiburg, Sigmaringen, Kornwestheim, Wertheim, and Neuenstein.
The State Archives of Baden-Württemberg is the memory of the state and its preceding territories since the Middle Ages. It takes over, stores, preserves and makes accessible all documents of lasting value from the authorities, courts and other agencies of the state.
Since 1826 the Royal House and State Archives have been located in the Neckarstrasse in Stuttgart. A considerable amount of records from the 19th and 20th centuries were damaged or lost during the war. In 1969 the Hauptsaatsarchiv was housed in a new building, rebuilt on the same site as the former.
The various offices are located in Stuttgart, Ludwigsburg, Karlsruhe, Freiburg, Sigmaringen, Wertheim, Neuenstein and Kornwestheim. The six archive departments are responsible for taking over, processing and making available the archive material.
