It's certainly a horror movie, but in the same way as Apocalypse Now or Don't Look Now. Those two films are referenced a lot in critical discussion of the film: sharing the central voyage up some nebulous stream, into madness, and beyond; also the central loss of a child, an integral desperation.
"Vinyan" is a disturbing journey to insanity visibly inspired in "Apocalypse Now" and with the same style of "Antichrist". The slow paced plot is supported by a good screenplay, stylish cinematography that keeps the environment of a nightmare and another outstanding performance of Emmanuelle Béart.

Dec 17, 2014 · Director Fabrice Du Welz creates a beautifully made eerie ghost story that is atmospheric and full of dread, without the need to rely on jump-scares and cheap shocks. There are two wonderful dream sequences, one in an empty Thai club bathed in red light and pouring rain.

While Vinyan is a beautifully shot film, it will most likely not please genre fans. It is more a horror film for art house snobs or members of Amnesty International, focusing mainly on the relationship between Jeanne and Paul, as it slowly disintegrates due to the loss of their son.
