'In' is most natural, but 'at' can be used as well; you usually 'meet at' places, but 'square' and other similarly open spaces (or enclosed spaces, like a shopping mall) are often met 'in'.

That is a ten-foot pole. The pole is ten feet long. In general, if used as an adjective, units are singular.

If I had to figure it out, I'd probably say that in is the area surrounded by the buildings, where you can meet people etc. while on can be used for the buildings or houses surrounding the square. Am I right?

At the square mean could mean beside the square, at the corner of the square, in the square, etc. In the square is more specific and means inside the square. Meet me in the square at the statue means meet me beside the statue which is inside the square. I hope that makes sense.

It is BE - it's a threat to discourage children from watching too much telly; "you will become ugly with eyes the shape of the TV set" = "you'll get square eyes, so go and do something useful". As a child, I didn't hear this very often from my parents because we didn't watch much TV, but the expression was very common back then.
