Mar 26, 2024 · In general, when thyroid hormone treatment is needed, just the T4 form is prescribed. This medication comes in pill form and is available in generic form as levothyroxine. There are also many brand names available including Synthroid, Levothroid, Levoxyl, and Unithroid.
The treatment choices include: (1) an anti-thyroid drug (described below), (2) radioactive iodine ablation and (3) thyroid surgery. A medication to slow down the heart rate (a beta-blocker) may also be used at first while the evaluation is being completed or until the treatment lowers the T3 and T4.
Treatment depends on many factors, for example your child’s age, and how long they have had hyperthyroidism.
