Some Like It Lukewarm (also known as "The Band Contest") is the 24th episode of Season 2 of The Monkees TV series, and is the 56th episode overall.

This episode guest stars Philadelphia disc jockey Jerry Blavat, and singer Deana Martin, daughter of Dean Martin.

The Monkees arrive at KXIW-TV for a "Rockathon Contest" in which five hundred dollars will be awarded to the winner. But the host of the rockathon, DJ Jerry Blavat, says the contest is only for mixed groups (boys and girls) and refuses to let the Monkees enter. The boys decide that whoever is going to be the girl has to volunteer for the part, and the other three all pick a reluctant Davy to be the girl.

After donning a dress and some awkward training on how to act like a girl, the Monkees return to the TV station. Jerry quickly enters them into the contest, but he becomes very attracted to Davy. Later, while Davy confides in the others his conviction that they're going to find out he's not a girl, another group, this one all girls calling themselves The Westminster Abbies, is also entered in the contest with Daphne, the front girl who dressed as a guy, and equally convinced that they will be found out.

The Abbies, performing (a very sped-up version of) Last Train to Clarksville, go on stage first immediately followed by the Monkees doing a slapstick version of The Door Into Summer. The contest ends in a tie score between the two groups, and Jerry declares they will both compete in a play-off tomorrow night, which doesn't sit well with either group.

Later at home, Davy is eager to get out of the dress, thinking that nobody from the station will show up at their doorstep, but as if on cue, there is a knock at their door: Jerry, carrying a big bouquet of pink roses, shows up to see "Miss Jones" and virtually throws himself at Davy promising to help to win the contest, and even bigger plans after that. But Davy buys time saying he wants to think about it, to which Jerry agrees and goes on his way. Later, the Monkees are planning to go out to dinner, but Davy is not interested in going out if he has to stay in drag. Meanwhile, the Abbies are also getting ready to go out, and Daphne, similarly unwilling to go out if she has to stay dressed as a guy, stays home. Davy and Daphne simultaneously get cabin fever and decide that they're going to go out on their own. Both in disguise wearing sunglasses, they arrive separately at the same restaurant and are unwittingly seated at the same booth. When they take their shades off, they both fall for one another. But when Davy sees the other Monkees arrive, he quickly makes his way out, accidentally leaving behind one of his high-heel boots, which he discovers only after he gets back home.

The next night as they're getting ready, Davy walks out of his dressing room, but when he sees Jerry approaching, he ducks into the other dressing room where Daphne is getting dressed. She notices that Davy is wearing only one shoe, and when she notices that his shoe is like the one he left behind in the restaurant last night, Davy finally reveals the truth. He is about to excuse himself for being dishonest with her until Daphne reveals her own truth. Davy understands and realizes that what they've done is wrong, but he is ready to make up for it...

Davy reveals the truth to Jerry, who rebukes him and is all but ready to disqualify the Monkees, but Davy claims they really are a mixed group and is ready to prove it: the Monkees and the Westminster Abbies have joined forces to create a supergroup, with the Monkees on their instruments and the Abbies dancing at their sides as they perform She Hangs Out. Admitting that "my heart now is amended", Jerry agrees to their performance, and the new band presumably wins the contest.

Davy introduces composer and songwriter Charlie Smalls to the viewing audience. In this scene, Smalls explains that there are differences in rhythms, and then demonstrates said differences with Davy.
