Murderball director Henry Alex Rubin delivers his first scripted feature in Disconnect, a dramatic thriller exploring the lives of ordinary people -- strangers, neighbors and colleagues -- struggling to connect in today's wired world.
One arc -- debatably the central one -- involves a high-school social outcast named Ben (Jonah Bobo), who becomes the victim of a humiliating Facebook prank set up by a couple of bullies at school. When the online stunt gets out of hand, Ben's father Rich (Jason Bateman) steps in to seek out Ben's tormentor. This is where the story begins to feel a bit outdated, as Rich takes longer than needed to resolve the issue. For a narrative that seeks to overturn the connective benefits of technology, it's apparent that writer Andrew Stern doesn't have a complete understanding of how these social networks operate.
Also taken in by deceit is Cindy (Paula Patton), a young woman who's grown distant from her husband Derek (Alexander Skarsgard). When Cindy strikes up an intimate relationship online, she and Derek soon become victims of identity theft, putting their life savings at risk.
Skarsgard and Patton's storyline is perhaps the most "cinematic" of the four as it adheres to a more traditional structure. It's also the only segment that feels the most complete in terms of having a beginning, middle and end -- although it's at the cost of having the lowest stakes.
Disconnect boasts an intriguing premise, solid performances and admirable direction, but the writing suffers from an inferior understanding of the Internet and one notable weak arc.
