  1. Defector was the first song by Muse I ever heard. It has a special place in my heart, I've learned it on drums, vocals, bass, and guitar. Lyrically, it gets too much hate. Matt uses powerful imagery when comparing politics to colors. The drums cutting out frequently adds depth and dynamics.

  2. Defector is a great song - has a great (vocal) melody and a guitar section so good they put it in twice! Unfortunately, that and the Handler are the only saving graces of Drones. Lyrics are dogtrash, but the rest of it is great. The guitar is chunky and the hook is unique in that classic Operatic Muse way.

The song is played fairly heavily, but in a major key. The vocals feature very Queen-like choir moments. The guitar is distorted, as well as the bass that stands out in the verses. It features an extensive use of Whammy pedal, including a Whammy pedal solo.

Muse recorded the song in a couple of days, but they later realised it is too fast. They dropped the tempo by 1 BPM, recorded it again, and realised it was too slow, so they had to make a compromise and record it 0.5 BPM faster.

By September, half of the album had still yet to be played live (the entire latter half of the album after JFK). It made its debut at the Music for Life gig on September 16 2015 and made no further appearances until may 2016. The gi...
