Witchfinder General is a British folk horror film based on a novel by Ronald Bassett, starring Vincent Price as a ruthless witch hunter during the English Civil War. The film follows the revenge of a Roundhead soldier (Ian Ogilvy) who tries to stop Hopkins and his assistant (Robert Russell) from killing his fiancée (Hilary Dwyer).
A historical drama based on the witch hunts of Matthew Hopkins, a notorious persecutor of witches in 17th century England. A young soldier tries to stop Hopkins and his henchman from torturing and killing innocent people, while his fiancée is a victim of their cruelty.

Matthew Hopkins was an English witch-hunter who claimed to hold the office of Witchfinder General during the English Civil War. He and his colleague John Stearne sent many people to be hanged for witchcraft in East Anglia, using a method of pricking and torture to extract confessions.
Witchfinder General was a British heavy metal band influenced by Black Sabbath and doom metal. They were active from 1979 to 1984 and reformed in 2006, but disbanded again in 2008.
Of the twenty-three women accused of witchcraft, four were said to have died in prison with nineteen later convicted and hanged. Hopkins appears to have assumed the title of Witch-Finder General in 1645, claiming to be officially commissioned by Parliament with the brief to uncover and prosecute witches.
