History of Peterhouse. Peterhouse was founded by Hugo de Balsham, Bishop of Ely, in 1284. It was the first College founded in Cambridge. However, early colleges were very different to colleges today – they were only for the fellows to live within. Students, who were as young as 14, had to find their accommodation in the city.
