Walter Marty Schirra Jr. (/ ʃɜːˈrɑː / shur-AH; March 12, 1923 – May 3, 2007) was an American naval aviator, test pilot, and NASA astronaut. In 1959, he became one of the original seven astronauts chosen for Project Mercury, which was the United States' first effort to put humans into space.
Wally Schirra was a U.S. astronaut who flew the Mercury Sigma 7 flight (1962) and was command pilot of Gemini 6 (1965), which made the first space rendezvous. He was the only astronaut to fly in all three of the early U.S. crewed spaceflight programs—Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo.
