It might also be to do with the fact that the left (sinister) side is regarded as dubious, even possibly devilish. Nobody in Russia was allowed to write left-handed, for instance.

Apr 12, 2006 · So, indeed, there is a more "sinister" meaning attached to the phrase, hence the reference in that other forum to "an ethnic slur". The parallel drawn by one contributor on that other forum with "Dutch courage" is interesting - a phrase that puts together two things/people that are deemed incompatible by the speaker, hence the (hidden) insult.

I wouldn't be surprised to see it in the text of some writer who enjoyed playing with words and wasn't too concerned about sounding idiomatic. Although it's not a rule of pronunciation, it does help to know that most English words where the "ch" derives from the Greek letter "chi" pronounce that "ch" as "k". This is often the case with words of science (chemistry), technology (the word technology itself) and religion (Christ).
