The Astronauts developed out of a group, The Stormtroupers, which was originally formed at Boulder High School, Boulder, Colorado in 1956 by Jon "Storm" Patterson (vocals, guitar), Robert Graham "Bob" Demmon (guitar; born February 11, 1939), and Brad Leach (drums).
The Astronauts were the first Boulder band to make Billboard’s national charts—Surfin’ with the Astronauts rose to a respectable #61. The album included “Baja,” penned by Lee Hazlewood (better known as the writer of Nancy Sinatra’s big hits).
The Astronauts were the first Boulder band to make the national charts. “Baja” became their signature song in late summer 1963, occupying #94 on the Billboard Hot 100 and beginning a string of hits on Denver’s KIMN radio.
The classic Astronauts lineup of Rich Fifield, Dennis Lindsey and Demmon on guitars, Patterson on bass and a new drummer: Jim Gallagher ended up with a long-term recording contract. The Astronauts were the first Boulder band to make the national charts.
