Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Television, previously known as MGM/UA Television, (common metonym: Lion) is the television studio arm of American media company Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) specializing in broadcast syndication and the production and distribution of television shows and miniseries.
MGM Home Entertainment LLC (also known as Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Home Entertainment, d/b/a MGM Home Entertainment and formerly known as MGM Home Video, MGM/CBS Home Video and MGM/UA Home Video) is the home entertainment distribution arm of the American media company Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM).
Jun 16, 2024 · Background. In 1981, MGM had purchased United Artists from Transamerica after the failure of the movie Heaven's Gate. In 1982, after MGM broke off from its partnership with CBS, it was renamed to MGM/UA Home Video (a.k.a. MGM/UA Home Entertainment Group ).
- (September 20, 1957-October 2, 1960) Visuals: On a dark (or gray) background, there is a brown (or drawn) statue of the MGM logo, as seen on movies from 1924-1983, sitting on a pedestal.
- (September 18, 1960-1973) Visuals: The logo starts with Leo the Lion (from the 1957 movie logo) inside a black circle border, which reads "METRO-GOLDWYN-MAYER TELEVISION".
- (May 18, 1969) Top of cylinder. Visuals: Over a black background is the 1966 MGM stylized lion print logo, which has some shiny marks inside of it.
- (October 9, 1973-1991) 1973 variant. 1979 variant. 1983 variant. 1986 variant. Visuals: Same as the 1957 film logo, but the word "TELEVISION" is added under the logo.
In March 2017, MGM announced a multi-year distribution deal with Annapurna Pictures for some international markets and including home entertainment, theatrical and television rights. Later on October 31, 2017, the two companies formed a US distribution joint venture called Mirror Releasing.
May 30, 2024 · Background. In 1997, the UA name was dropped from MGM/UA Home Entertainment, renaming it to MGM Home Entertainment. The assets of the former Orion Home Video was transferred to MGM itself, as well as picking up the pre-1996 PolyGram film library.
