    A stalwart of the East German film industry, Maetzig was an influential – and occasionally controversial – director who made such films as Ehe im Schatten (1947), Der Buntkarierten (1949), Rat der Götter (1950), the two part biopic of Ernst Thaelmann (1954-55), Der schweigende Stern (1960) and Das Kaninchen bin ich (1965).
