Kurt Maetzig (25 January 1911 – 8 August 2012) was a German film director who had a significant effect on the film industry in East Germany. He was one of the most respected filmmakers of the GDR. After his retirement he lived in Wildkuhl, Mecklenburg, and had three children.

A stalwart of the East German film industry, Maetzig was an influential – and occasionally controversial – director who made such films as Ehe im Schatten (1947), Der Buntkarierten (1949), Rat der Götter (1950), the two part biopic of Ernst Thaelmann (1954-55), Der schweigende Stern (1960) and Das Kaninchen bin ich (1965).
He made some of the first films in Germany after WWII ended and was one of the members of the Filmaktiv involved in the founding of the DEFA Film Studio. He worked as a director and author, and also became DEFA’s artistic director in 1946.
