José Gálvez, marquis de la Sonora was a Spanish colonial administrator particularly noted for his work as inspector general (visitador general) in New Spain (Mexico), 1765–71. Among his important accomplishments were the reorganization of the tax system, the formation of a government tobacco.

José de Gálvez (b. 2 January 1720; d. 17 June 1787), a leading Spanish bureaucrat and statesman instrumental in the reform of eighteenth-century colonial administration. Born a poor hidalgo in Macharaviaya, an Andalusian hill village, Gálvez earned a law degree at the University of Salamanca.

In 1779 he founded a colony in the valley of Sonora Mexico, which soon prospered. Gálvez was rewarded for his efforts by being created the Marqués of Sonora. José de Gálvez died in 1787.
