In the year 2163, the starship Ikarie XB-1 (Ikarus XB-1) is sent to the mysterious "White Planet" orbiting the star Alpha Centauri. Travelling at near-light speed, the journey takes around 28 months for the astronauts, although the effects of relativity mean that 15 years will have elapsed on Earth by the time they reach their destination.

It’s the year 2163, and the spaceship Ikarie XB-1 is off to explore life on the ‘white planet’ orbiting the Alpha Centauri. Like the Greek mythological figure Icarus, whose name christens the spaceship, we follow the mixed crew as they fly too close to the sun, drawing ever closer to something that – without giving the game away too much – will be found all too familiar to its audiences.
Ikarie XB-1 (retitled Voyage to the End of the Universe in the US) is a Czech sci-fi film which is notable both for its place in cinematic history in general and for its relationship to Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey specifically. The story follows an intergalactic expedition sent to investigate a planet near Alpha Centauri.
For the film screening that took place on 11 December, we chose one of the best-known Czech sci-fi films Icarus XB 1 directed by Jindřich Polák. The story took place in the year of 2163, while a spaceship including a forty-person crew took off on s space journey to the Alpha Centauri planets.
