   Is Defiance a good game?

   • Thing is, it’s just not very good. Rare well-designed quests are overshadowed by a host of others that feel phoned in, and though the fundamentals of shooting are competent, weak enemy AI makes the PvE combat a bore. Respectable PvP combat goes a long way, but not far enough to make Defiance a recommendable experience.

   Does Defiance have problems?

   • Defiance has problems. Played in the first few days after launch, it was a roulette wheel of sudden disconnections, intrusive downtime and near-constant server lag. To its credit, developer Trion Worlds has pulled out all the stops to get the game functional and only a week later it's already much more stable. But it's not fixed.

   Is Defiance a gimmick?

   • Defiance may be an ambitious project. Linking an online action game with a TV-series is a smart idea but one that here mostly comes of as a mere gimmick. The story is unengaging and the action mediocre and monotonous. Not to say anything about the myriad of bugs that utterly destroys the experience.

   How does Defiance work?

   • Instead of making your character feel uniquely yours through abilities, Defiance puts a bigger emphasis on the guns you choose. For example, I play extremely aggressively most of the time, so I tend to focus on equipping shotguns and heavy machineguns. If I’m in a dungeon I might equip a beam weapon that allows me to heal my teammates.

   How drab is the world of defiance?

   • The world of Defiance is drab in the way that TV science fiction has a tendency to be drab. The game feels like it has been shot - appropriately enough, I suppose - on a California back-lot, and its character design is limited to what can be assembled out of prop room cast-offs, face paint, and the odd prosthetic nose.
