Apr 11, 2024 · Athabasca Falls is a picturesque stop on the drive between Jasper and Banff. It’s well known not for its height, but for its extreme force. This 24-meter (79-foot) waterfall is categorized as a class five fall – which essentially means it’s crazy powerful!
Pouring over a layer of hard quartzite, the falls have cut into the softer limestone beneath, carving intricate features, including potholes and a short canyon. Flowing from the glaciers of the Columbia Icefield, the Athabasca River is the largest river system in Jasper.
Athabasca Falls is a waterfall in Jasper National Park on the upper Athabasca River, approximately 30 kilometres (19 mi) south of the townsite of Jasper, Alberta, Canada, and just west of the Icefields Parkway.

One of the must-do side trips along the Icefields Parkway, in my opinion, Athabasca Falls is an impressive sight to see. The falls drops about 25 m (80 feet). Though the height is not particularly remarkable, the amount of water that gets funneled over the falls and into the narrow gorge below is!
