- Name Response. Easy. “Your Dog’s Name” Teach your dog to respond to its name. One of the first things to do when you get a new puppy is teach them their name.
- Sit. Easy. “Sit” Get your dog to sit down on command. This is one of the first tricks you’ll want to teach you pup. It also leads into many other tricks that you’ll want to teach them including laying down and shaking hands.
- Lie Down. Easy. “Down” Teach your dog to lay down on the ground. This is an important trick to help get your dog to relax. It also leads into several other tricks and is helpful for controlling behavior.
- Paw. Your dog learns to place his paw in your outstretched hand; like a handshake, but better. Difficulty: Time: Prerequisite: Easy. 1 hour(s) Sit. Steps. At your dog’s level, hold a treat in a closed hand facing upwards.
- Hand Touch. This trick teaches your dog to move towards your palm and bop it with their nose! Difficulty: Time: Prerequisite: Easy. 1 hour(s) None. Steps. Start off with both hands behind your back with your dog in front of you.
- Spin. Your dog learns to walk in a tight circle on the cue ‘spin’ Difficulty: Time: Prerequisite: Medium. 2 hour(s) None. Steps. Have your dog positioned in a ‘heel’ position next to your leg and facing in the same direction as you.
- Middle Trick. Teach your dog to come and stand between your legs and look up at you. Difficulty: Time: Prerequisite: Easy. 2 hour(s) None. Steps. Have your dog in front of you to start with.
- Sit. Level: Easy. For this basic obedience skill, lure your dog with a high-value treat by holding it close to their nose while they’re standing, then hover the treat over their head.
- Stay (or place) Level: Easy. To train your dog to stay, start by getting your dog into a sitting position and reward them once their bottom is on the ground.
- Heel. Level: Easy. Teaching a dog to “heel” means training them to walk beside you. This is an essential obedience skill that can help combat leash-pulling, but it’s also a fun way to show off your dog’s smarts.
- Shake. Level: Easy. Once your dog has mastered the “sit” and “stay” commands, get them into a sitting position. Keep a high-value treat in one closed hand and wait for them to sniff or paw at it.
