The Jörmungandr (also known as the World Serpent, the Midgard Serpent) is a large Mystery Class dragon that first appeared in Dragons: The Nine Realms.

    Hatchling to Adult

The Jörmungandr is a large dragon with a serpentine appearance, characterized by its elongated eel-like body and distinct frills that resemble a cobra's hood. It also features multiple dorsal fins of varying sizes that run from its head to its tail, a pair of large and small fins that are situated near the end of its tail, and a pair of fins behind its jawline. In terms of physical structure, the Jörmungandr's body is more robust and less streamlined compared to that of a typical snake, as it has a flatter shape. Its other distinguishing feature is its triple-split jaw with protruding teeth and two pairs of long fangs on the side and front of its lower jaws. His size is similar to the gigantic Screaming Death.

    Jaw Strength

The Jörmungandr exhibits impressive jaw strength, allowing it to securely grasp its prey. This indicates its substantial bite force and well-developed muscles. In a notable display of its power, the Jörmungandr effortlessly clamped onto a sizable Sky Torcher dragon, which was similar in size to the dragon previously encountered by the Dragon Club.

    Split mouth

The Jörmungandr possesses two lower jaws that can expand to a significant width, which can accommodate bigger prey items, similar to all species of snake.

    Strength and Combat

The Jörmungandr effortlessly employs its immense strength to pull the Sky Torcher, a prey of comparable length but with a more slender body, which demonstrates the exceptional power and efficiency of this predator-prey interaction. Despite possessing considerable strength, it seems that the creature is unable to successfully free itself from its confinement. The Jörmungandr's immense size allows it to forcefully ram into opponents, while its tail serves as a versatile weapon, capable of delivering powerful strikes akin to a whip or flail. It is able to withstand the fire of the Sky Torcher, and the blasts of Gem Breakers. In a battle, it can easily take down a large group of dragons with a single hit of its powerful tail.

    Mist Twister Mist

The Mist from a Mist Twister can dilute the toxic breath it emits, lowering the risk to a dragon's health, and countering it directly as shown by Wu and Wei.

    Timberjack Wings

The sharp wings of a Timberjack can slice the Jörmungandr's nearly impenetrable skin, leaving massive scars, as shown by Jack in "Ragnarok: Part 2".

    Lack of Wings

As demonstrated by Thunder in How to Train Jörmungandr, the Jörmungandr can be easily outmaneuvered by smaller, faster flying dragons, as the sole individual struggled to strike down Thunder for a period of their battle.

The Jörmungandr holds the top position as a predator among all dragons, displaying an incredibly high level of danger that warranted its confinement. Before engaging in any reactive actions, the dragon demonstrated a patient approach, meticulously choosing the perfect moment to launch an attack against another dragon. Once the encounter concluded, the dragon departed without causing harm to the smaller dragons in the area. This behavior suggests a long-awaited release, as if the dragon had been eagerly anticipating and longing for its freedom for a considerable period.

Once freed, the dragon went on a restless rampage, attacking and destroying as much of the Hidden World as it could. The Jörmungandr didn't seem to display hunting behavior, but rather acting on an impulse to destroy all life in its reach. This would explain why it would willingly destroy its own environment and food sources without rest. This urge for destruction is why the dragon was said to bring about the end of the world.

•D'Angelo believes the Jörmungandr could also be the reason dragons fear serpent-like creatures, due to its status as the apex predator of all dragon kind. The Dragon Club is currently unaware that eels are very poisonous to most species of dragons and can cause the disease Eel Pox if ingested by a dragon.

•The dragon's name and appearance are inspired by Jörmungandr, the World Serpent, which appears in Norse mythology.

•It remains unknown whether Jörmungandr is the last of its kind and how it survived 1,300 years in prison without food. It may have been in suspended sleep, as some animals can do, to survive that long. For example the Frozen Skrill in his iceberg or the Foreverwing. Only the Red Death lives longer than the Jörmungandr. If Jörmungandr had been hibernating during its imprisonment it would explain the moss, stones, and dirt on its hide.

•The way Tom tried to train the Jörmungandr with Valka's Staff is almost similar to how snake charmers use a pungi to "hypnotize" a snake.

•In a manner reminiscent to the events in "How to Train Your Dragon 2", Jörmungandr's defeat follows a similar pattern. Toothless, assuming the role of the Alpha Dragon, triumphs over Drago's Bewilderbeast, eventually leading to his descendant, Thunder, ascending as the new King of Dragons. Thunder then utilizes this newfound power to confront Jörmungandr, the serpent, in an epic battle.

•Jörmungandr also loses part of its teeth/tusks during the battle, similar to Drago's Bewilderbeast.
