"Ragnarok: Part 1" is the fifth episode of the eighth season of Dragons: The Nine Realms.

After being called for an emergency meeting, the kids anxiously wait outside of ICARIS Station, wondering what the meeting could be about. But wanting information right away, Alex and Eugene try to get answers out of Pete when he walks passed them, but he only gives random unrelated info. The kids are then called to go inside, where May informs them that Jörmungandr is too big a threat to ICARIS if it were to come to the surface, and if they can't stop it, she will have no choice but to evacuate and permanently shut down ICARIS. Tom objects to the decision, but Olivia admits that they have no choice in the matter. The riders are distraught at the possibility of not only losing their dragons, but having to split up across the world. However, Eugene claims he isn't worried since he can make new friends easily, which upsets Alex. Tom then reminds his friends that they still have time, and just need a new foolproof plan to stop Jörmungandr. Just then, Alex gets an alert that Jörmungandr is attacking the King's Realm, which puts Thunder's family in danger.

When the riders arrive at the King's realm, they see that Jörmungandr has already wreaked havoc, and find Thunder's parents and the Elder injured and incapacitated; but his three younger siblings are unharmed. They then bring the injured dragons inside the Elder's cave, while Tom struggles to come up with a plan to stop Jörmungandr. When Tom asks Jun for more information about Jörmungandr's legend, all she can tell him is that Jörmungandr was the son of the god of Mischief, Loki, which explains its craftiness; and that Jörmungandr's destructive behavior signifies "Ragnarök", which is a prophesied apocalyptic event that will destroy the nine realms. Tom then realizes that while Jörmungandr has destroyed every realm it visited, it has failed to destroy the King's Realm, and he is confident that it will return to finish the job. Finally knowing that he is one step ahead of Jörmungandr, Tom comes up with a plan to trap it by using another cave in the King's Realm as a new cage for it, but they'll need to create a Gronckle Iron gate to trap it. He then shows everyone that the Book of Dragons has the recipe for Gronckle Iron, and the ingredients can be found in the Hidden World. Tom decides that he and Jun will gather the ingredients, while the others stay behind to protect Thunder's family. As Tom and Jun fly off to start gathering the ingredients, Jörmungandr secretly watches them.

When Tom and Jun arrive at the Desert Realm to collect Sandstone, they discovered that Jörmungandr has already gone through it, and find the normally fierce and territorial Glass Caster terrified and cowering in fear after Jörmungandr's rampage. Jun considers relocating the Glass Caster, but Tom rejects the idea since they don't have the time, and if they fail, there will be no safe place left for any dragon.

Back in the King's realm, Eugene is overwhelmed by Thunder's rambunctious siblings, and Alex gives him the cold shoulder for his previous statement. In the Nature Realm, while collecting Limestone, Tom and Jun are suddenly attacked by a group of aggressive Vine Tails, but Thunder establishes dominance over them, and they quickly calm down. Jun expresses her fear of the destruction of the Hidden World if Ragnarök happens, and she even adds that the legend of Jörmungandr also includes his arch nemesis, Thor, the god of thunder, and fears that it means Thunder will be in danger. Tom vows that they will stop Jörmungandr, and that they can defy the legend because the riders where never a part of it. They then head to the Fire Realm to collect Iron and Gronckles, only to find the Sky Torcher, wounded from its last encounter with Jörmungandr, sleeping nearby, and its Flame Throwers blocking the way to both items. Tom and Jun try to sneak past the Sky Torcher without waking it up, but a Gronckle wanting the iron accidentally wakes the Sky Torcher up, and the latter begins attacking the intruders. But Thunder momentarily diverts the Sky Torcher's attention, allowing Tom to fly away on a Gronckle, but when the Gronkcle is too slow to escape the Sky Torcher's fire power, Thunder pushes it and Tom away from its blast, and they all successfully escape the Sky Torcher's wrath. When Tom and Jun arrived in Buzzsaw's camp to use his forge, where they find no signs of Buzzsaw or Jack. They then get to work forging the Gronckle Iron.
