Christ's Hospital was established in 1552 by Edward VI to care for the homeless or unfortunate children in London. It was based originally in Greyfriars and unusual at the time in that it catered for girls as well as boys. It was not only a hospital, but also a school of reading, writing and arithmetic, and had an original intake of 380 children.
The building often referred to as Hertford Castle is in fact the gatehouse. The castle itself no longer stands but occupied the enclosed area behind the gatehouse. The Hertford & Ware Waterbus was introduced in 2013 and runs along The River Lee between Bircherley Green and Ware Priory every weekend from April. During the summer holiday months the boat operates on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Services depart at 12pm and 4pm with single tickets available for £7 and return tickets at £12.
The Hertford & Welwyn Junction Railway was a branch line opened on 1st March 1858, running from a junction with the Great Northern Railway at Welwyn to Cowbridge station at Hertford, adjacent to Hertford Brewery. There were two other stations on the line, at Hertingfordbury and Cole Green.
