The Great North Run starts in Newcastle upon Tyne on the A167 road (the central motorway), on the edge of both the city centre and the Town Moor. The route heads east and south down the motorway section, around the eastern side of the city centre, then crosses the Tyne Bridge into Gateshead.

The very first Great North Run race in 1981. The first race took place on 28 June 1981 with over 12,000 runners participating, eventually becoming the largest running event in the UK. The first winner was British former Olympic 10,000m competitor Mike McLeod, who hails from Dilston in Northumberland.
Who started the Great North Run? The race was established in 1981 by former Olympic 10,000m bronze medallist Brendan Foster. In that first year, 12,000 runners descended on Newcastle to run the half marathon route - in 2022, 41 years later, that number is expected to reach 60,000. The Great North Run takes place in September each year.
