   • Interest in her work grew to such an extent that her patrons included US President Richard Nixon, whose office commissioned two paintings from her. Maud Lewis died of pneumonia in 1970. She was buried in a child’s coffin in a pauper’s grave at the North Range Cemetery south of Marshalltown.
