Queen Mary College can be traced back to 1887 and it was initially established to provide education to people from all backgrounds. Westfield College was established in 1882. What does Queen Mary College mean?
Queen Mary University of London (QMUL, or informally QM, and formerly Queen Mary and Westfield College) is a public research university in Mile End, East London, England. It is a member institution of the federal University of London.
In the mid-to-late 1980s, the University of London underwent considerable reorganisation, and many smaller colleges were merged. Consequently, Westfield was merged with Queen Mary College in 1989, forming Queen Mary and Westfield College.
In 1989 Queen Mary College (informally known as QMC) merged with Westfield College to form Queen Mary & Westfield College (often abbreviated to QMW). Over subsequent years, activities were concentrated on the Queen Mary site, with the Westfield site eventually sold.
Queen Mary has a long, proud and distinctive history built on four historic institutions stretching back to 1785 and beyond. Our founding institutions are: St Bartholomew’s Hospital Medical College, London Hospital Medical College, Westfield College and Queen Mary College.
A few years later, in 1995, Queen Mary and Westfield College merged with St Bartholomew's Hospital Medical College and the London Hospital Medical College. The College is now know as Queen Mary, University of London and is fully integrated, with several campuses in East London and The City.
