Li Xuanba. Lǐ Yuán bà (李元霸) (599年－614年) was Tang Gaozu 's fourth son, courtesy name Dàdé (大德). He was born by Lady Dou. He died in 614 after being struck on the head by his own weapon. After the establishment of the Tang dynasty, he was posthumously created Prince Huai of Wei.
There are two archetypes of Li Yuanba. The first one is Li Xuanba ( 李玄霸 ), the historical third son of Li Yuan who died young. Li Yuanba's name and social identity are derived from Li Xuanba. Another one is Li Daoxuan ( 李道玄 ), who was a famous royal-family general of the early Tang dynasty.
Since Lady Dou grew up in the palace, she was familiar with politics and history books. She assisted her husband in his studies and raised their children. They had four sons, Li Jiancheng, Li Shimin, Li Xuanba, and Li Yuanji, and one daughter who would become Princess Pingyang. Lady Dou established a close bond with her mother-in-law, Lady Dugu.
Emperor Taizong of Tang (599-649) was the second emperor of Tang, and often considered to be one of the most successful emperors in Chinese history. He was born Li Shimin, son of Emperor Gaozu, the founder of the Tang dynasty. He took the name Taizong in 626 when he became emperor.
