Polygons are 2-dimensional shapes. They are made of straight lines, and the shape is "closed" (all the lines connect up).
Regular or Irregular
A regular polygon has all angles equal and all sides equal, otherwise it isirregular
Concave or Convex
A convexpolygon has no angles pointing inwards. More precisely, no internal angle can be more than 180°. If any internal angle is greater than 180° then the polygon is concave. (Think: concave has a "cave" in it)
Simple or Complex
A simple polygon has only one boundary, and it doesn't cross over itself. A complexpolygon intersects itself! Many rules about polygons don't work when it is complex.
Quadrilateral
A QuadBike has 4 wheels
Pentagon
The "Pentagon" in Washington DC has 5 sides
Hexagon
Honeycomb has Hexagons
Learn what a polygon is, how to classify it by sides, angles, and shapes, and how to name it. Explore interactive polygons and see examples of regular, irregular, convex, concave, simple and complex polygons.
The sum of exterior angles of a polygon is 360°. The formula for calculating the size of an exterior angle is: exterior angle of a polygon = 360 ÷ number of sides. Learn about and revise angles...
Learn what polygons are and how to identify them by their number of sides and angles. Find out the types of polygons, such as regular and irregular, and their properties, such as parallel and perpendicular lines.
Learn what a polygon is, how to classify it as regular or irregular, convex or concave, and explore its properties and angles. Find free resources for teaching and learning about polygons in maths.
There are lots of different types of polygon. Find out about quadrilaterals, triangles, polygons and circles in this Second Level Maths guide from BBC Bitesize.
In geometry, a polygon (/ ˈ p ɒ l ɪ ɡ ɒ n /) is a plane figure made up of line segments connected to form a closed polygonal chain. The segments of a closed polygonal chain are called its edges or sides. The points where two edges meet are the polygon's vertices or corners. An n-gon is a polygon with n sides; for example, a triangle is a 3 ...
