   • AltaVista was originally built in part as a demo of DEC's 64 bit processors. At the time most Unix machines were still 32 bit and couldn't manage a whole search index in RAM easily. DEC Alphas could. The project came out of DEC WRL, which in the 90s was still one of the grand old systems laboratories in the vein of Bell Labs.
