Two years later, he captained the U.S. side to the Confederations Cup final after beating Spain – then the world’s top ranked team – in the semifinal which ended Spain’s historic 35-game unbeaten streak.
Carlos Bocanegra. A defender who was captain of the United States in the World Cup and starred for clubs in both the United States and Europe. Bocanegra played 110 full internationals for the United States between 2001 and 2012, including six games at the 2006 and 2010 World Cups.
Tied for 10th all-time in U.S. Soccer history with 110 caps, he scored an impressive 14 goals during his international career. Bocanegra helped lead the USMNT to two Gold Cup victories in 2002 and 2007 and was captain during the U.S. victory against No. 1-ranked Spain at the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup.
