Günther Gustav Stapenhorst wurde am 25. Juni 1883 im elsässischen Guebwiller, damals Gebweiler, geboren. Nach einer Ausbildung an der Marineakademie trat er 1900 in die kaiserliche Marine ein. Als Korvettenkapitän war er 1916 an der Skagerrakschlacht beteiligt, der größten Seeschlacht des Ersten Weltkriegs.
