Heinz Kamnitzer (10 May 1917, Berlin – 21 May 2001, Berlin) was a German writer and historian. He was part of the political-cultural establishment and a vocal government supporter in the German Democratic Republic (East Germany).
Kamnitzer wurde 1955 als Institutsdirektor entlassen, gab seine Professur auf und wurde freischaffender Schriftsteller. Er schrieb zahlreiche Sachbücher, Lyrikbände und Belletristik. Bekannt ist vor allem sein Buch über das Sterben von Arnold Zweig , „Der Tod des Dichters“.

In response to the counter-demonstration at the 1988 Liebknecht-Luxemburg parade, Kamnitzer wrote this op-ed essay, entitled “Remembering the Dead” as a way of distancing the East German Communist Party (SED) from the actions of the demonstrators.
