Those distinctive opening beats in Iggy Pop’s ‘Lust for Life’ mean just one thing to Trainspotting fans: Mark Renton, running away from the police, advising us to “choose life”. In T2, Renton returns to his old room, and cues up Iggy on the turntable. Yet after one beat, he pushes the needle away. That song belong to 20 years ago, and that powerful...

Francis Begbie, throwing an empty pint glass over his shoulder, is one of the most iconic scenes in the first film. In T2, Franco finds himself wandering down memory lane, revisiting the thuggery of his past, and indeed, this very moment. Instead of grimacing, he laughs, displaying that same menace. Irvine Welsh has said of the character: “Begbie i...

The first time we met Renton, he was on the run. Sprinting right into a car, rolling over the bonnet, and laughing hysterically. In T2, there’s a moment where Mark finds himself on top of a car once more. Cue a long pause, then that laugh again. In this moment, with his face pressed against a stranger’s windscreen, the old Renton reawakens.

In T2, Renton has replaced his heroin habit with a “good addiction” – running. He takes Spud for a ‘light jog’ up Arthur’s Seat, and when we first meet him again, he’s hitting the treadmill hard. All that training comes in handy when Begbie learns he’s back, too. As Welsh says: “Renton is still on the run from the vengeance of Begbie”. And in some ...

In T2, there’s a new leading lady, Veronica. But that doesn’t mean Kelly MacDonald’s Diane is out of the picture. Renton goes to see Diane, now a lawyer, with Veronica in tow. Just before he leaves, Diane stops him with a word of bittersweet, original-referencing advice. Watch out for it.

Producer Bernie Bellew’s favourite moment was filming at Corrour Station. “We took a beautiful three-hour train journey into the Highlands to revisit the iconic location from the first movie.” That iconic location is the four main players, standing on the train tracks, looking into the Scottish wilderness. In T2, they revisit it to pay tribute to T...

There are many moments in T2 in which they flashback to the first film, but the trip down memory lane doesn’t stop there. Danny Boyle has included scenes showing Renton, Sick Boy, Begbie and Spud in their youth. Ewan Mcgregor said it had an impact on him. “I walked past the trailer and did a double take. There’s young Ewen in his white and grey str...

As producer Andrew Macdonald says: “1996 was a good time to be Scottish.” But the Scotland, and particularly the Edinburgh, of T2, is a very different place 21 years on. Trams run through Princes Street. Sick Boy takes selfies. Everyone, and everything, feels a little older.

The author and creator of Trainspotting has a minor role again in the new film, which is nostalgic for fans of the book. Welsh himself described revisiting the story as a “first love type of thing”.

Without giving too much away, the most heartwarming moment in T2 comes when Spud decides to embrace the nostalgia and write down his memories. It sums up why Trainspotting struck a chord with so many: it’s real stories, told honestly and well. When Mark revisits his past, Sick Boy tells him “you’re a tourist in your own youth.” Watching the new fil...
