Mamoun Hassan (12 December 1937 – 29 July 2022) was a Saudi-born British screenwriter, director, editor, producer and teacher of film who held prominent positions in British cinema during the 1970s and 80s, frequently backing experimental work.

We were very sad to hear of the recent death of Mamoun Hassan. Mamoun played a very significant role in the development of independent cinema in the UK and without his support Bill Douglas, and many other filmmakers, would not have had the opportunity to get their vision to an audience.
Mamoun Hassan was born on 12 December 1937 in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. He was a producer and writer, known for The Good Life (2008), The Meeting (1964) and Machuca (2004). He was married to Moya Gillespie. He died on 29 July 2022 in the UK.

Mamoun Hassan. A Saudi Arabian producer, writer and editor, who moved to the UK as a teenager and became an influential figure in British cinema as the first head of production of the British Film Institute (1971-1974) and later managing director of the National Film Finance Corporation (1979-1984).
