A stalwart of the East German film industry, Maetzig was an influential – and occasionally controversial – director who made such films as Ehe im Schatten (1947), Der Buntkarierten (1949), Rat der Götter (1950), the two part biopic of Ernst Thaelmann (1954-55), Der schweigende Stern (1960) and Das Kaninchen bin ich (1965).
Kurt Maetzig was born in Berlin-Charlottenburg in 1911. His father owned a film duplication facility, and his mother came from a wealthy family of tea merchants from Hamburg and Denmark. During the First World War, Maetzig lived in Hamburg-Harvestehude with his grandmother.
