A blue checkmark beside a network name means that you're connected. If you see Auto Join disabled under Settings > Wi-Fi > [Your Network], tap the More Info button and then tap Auto-Join.
Make sure that you have the latest version of iOS or iPadOS. On the iPhone or iPad that provides Personal Hotspot, go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset [Device] > Reset, then tap Reset Network Settings. This will also reset Wi-Fi networks and passwords, mobile data settings, and VPN and APN settings that you've used before.
