You'll know a trap track by the signature beat style—stuttering kick drums, hi-hats, 808s, and oodles of synthesizers. Trap took its root in Atlanta, where the likes of Ghetto Mafia and Dungeon Family first used the term to describe their sound.

The mid-90s old-school hip-hop genre made heavy use of strong kicks and snare, sometimes putting those drum sounds ahead of the hi-hats and other parts of a beat arrangement. Boom-bap is truly a samples-oriented style of beat making.
