At ages 10 and 12, the boys have so little understanding of the persecution of Jews that Joseph thinks nothing of swapping his yellow star for a bag of marbles. I read A Bag of Marbles when it first came out in 1973. This film is very true to the printed story. But it goes light on the very real aspect of collaboration. Still, from the point of view of the author - he is remembering a time when he was very young - it is very good.
