The full and official name of the university is Danylo Halytsky Lviv National Medical University. At first, it existed as the medical faculty of the Lviv University. In 1939 Medical Faculty of Lviv University was rearranged into Lviv State Medical University with the faculties of general medicine and pharmacy.
On November 16, 1784, according to the privilege of Emperor Joseph II, a university with four faculties (theology, law, philosophy and medicine) has been renewed in Lviv. The oldest campuses of the university are located on Pekarska Street and are mostly built in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
In 2010 The Medical School of Lviv State Railway was reorganized into the Medical College, which became part of Danylo Halytsky Lviv National Medical University as a structural subdivision.
