  6. D'Arcy Wentworth Thompson was appointed to the first Chair of Biology at University College, Dundee, taking up the appointment in January 1885 and remaining for 32 and a half years. In 1917 he moved to take up the Chair of Natural History at the University of St. Andrews, a post he held until his death 31 years later in June 1948.
