Smith created two critically acclaimed short films as an undergraduate, Daily Rains (1990) and Chronicles of a Lying Spirit (1992), and produced her first narrative feature-length film, Drylongso (1998), while completing her MFA; the film was well received at many film festivals, including the Sundance Film Festival.

Cauleen Smith (born Riverside, California, 1967) is an interdisciplinary artist whose work reflects upon the everyday possibilities of the imagination. Operating in multiple materials and arenas, Smith roots her work firmly within the discourse of mid-twentieth-century experimental film.
Cauleen Smith is a filmmaker and artist. With a BA in cinema from San Francisco State University (1991) and an MFA in filmmaking from the University of California-Los Angeles (1998), her interdisciplinary work expands from histories and practices of experimental film, including structuralism, Third World cinema, and science fiction.
